Brad Choate mentioned the Open Source CMS site, which offers a way to take a look at a variety of open source PHP and MySQL CMS and LMS systems without having to install them yourself first. Some of these strike me as viable alternatives or supplements for WebCT and Blackboard. I’m especially intrigued by Moodle.

The details are here, but basically it’s a $200.00 mail in rebate on the purchase of a laptop (most iBook and PowerBook models) and a regular iPod. It’s for education customers only, but Apple’s criteria for educational customers is very reasonable. If you think you qualify, you likely do. I’ll admit, it’s going to be very hard to pay my filing fee instead of replacing my just over three years old 500 MHz dual USB 12 inch iBook.
